Hi there! I’m glad you stopped by.
My name is Douglas and I write the Newsletter Postcards from Latin America. This newsletter is about ordinary things written from a not so ordinarty perspective. It is about the things in life that matter the most that we often take for granted.
Newsletter topics explore ideas related to work, human scale economies, sustainable communities, and rethinking our assumpitons about how we think it all works + things that I discover that is really only possible when living in Central America.
After spending the last 8+ years doing outreaches in Nicaragua, my wife and I finally moved here full time. It was a slow evolution, somewhat accidental, but none the less exactly what we needed to do.
As a result of the move, I have discovered some interesting things not just about the world around me, but myself as well. Living and immersing yourself into a different culture full time has a way of reshaping the way you see the word and uncovering the shaky assumptions that once seemed so certain.
It is an intriguing experiment to move out of the United States……especially to Central America. The pace of life is very different here (which is actually quite refreshing!). And now, post January 2025 more than ever, the view from this vantage point is starkly different than before.
This Newsletter has been a long time in the works. I have wanted for years to have a place to collect the images, discoveries and thoughts that emerge while working and traveling in Nicaragua. But it seemed that they just did not fit in the classic social media platforms. Luckily, I finally stumbled accross Substack. As I explored the platform and read the diverse writings, I knew that this would be the place to build my collection.
